Program Description
Northwest Passages, LLC is a 6-24 month program for young women between the ages of 16-22 who require assistance in gaining the necessary skills for living independently. We provide a dependable and secure environment, enabling young women to develop healthy coping, living, communication and interpersonal skills. Also, they will receive academic guidance and counseling as they complete high school, attend college, or seek vocational training. Our main focus is mentoring, loving, and assisting young women as they navigate through the critical life passage from adolescence into adulthood.

Northwest Passages is located in a beautifully restored historical home within walking distance of downtown Kalispell. The program is designed to offer a uniquely intimate “family-style” setting with a maximum of 6 young women in the home. Residents live in one of four bedrooms located on the 2nd story, each with a private bathroom. A carriage house on the property contains two apartments that allow for higher functioning young women to live in a simulated independent situation as a learning experience prior to leaving the program.

Our program is carried out in a warm family environment overseen by founders, Alan and Kandy Satterlee. Kandy has a B.S. in Behavioral Sciences and has worked in both clinical and residential settings with troubled youth. Alan has four years of a diverse experience at social service agencies in Houston and most recently as Director of Development at Hope Ranch, a residential treatment facility for teenage girls. Alan and Kandy have a passion for working with adolescent girls and want to empower young women to heal through a successful transition from residential treatment to independent living. They have two teenagers of their own, and reside in Kalispell, Montana. The house parents at Northwest Passages LLC will be Ed and Bonnie Sheils. Bonnie is a certified teacher and has worked with troubled teenage girls in a residential treatment program for the past 3 years. Ed also lived on-site at the residential treatment program where Bonnie worked, has a B.S. in Biology and has experience working with teens in a wilderness camp setting.

Northwest Passages is a step-down program designed to provide a safe and healthy transitional living environment for young women ages 16-22. The term “step-down” implies that girls usually come to Northwest Passages from other residential treatment programs at a time when they are ready to “step-down” from the highly structured and sheltered environment of residential treatment. Northwest Passages provides a combination of independence and supervision so young women can experience success. Upon admission a unique plan is formed identifying strengths and needs of the young woman based on the input of her family, professional care providers, and her own goals and objectives. As higher levels of responsibility and accountability are reached within the plan, the young woman will be given more independence in preparation for living on her own.
