| Lake Wylie, SC Boys and girls ages 7-16 come to Thunderbird from all over the United States and as well as from many foreign countries. Campers stay for one session or multiple sessions. Several first year campers select the one week session which is only for children aged 7-12. Thunderbird has been in operation since 1936 and celebrates 65 years of excellence in camping programs. Originally, the camp was founded to provide opportunities for less privileged youth and was owned by the Charlotte Observer. Today the YMCA Of Greater Charlotte operates Camp Thunderbird and remains committed to serving children from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Forty families in need receive camp scholarships each session. Funds are raised annually to support this endeavor; an opportunity for giving is noted on the camper application. | |
