The “whole-person” is addressed at Hargrave. Development of personal responsibility, fitness, academic grades and moral character are important goals for each Cadet. Opportunities for personal achievement lead each Cadet to a more successful, rewarding life.

Academics
A Hargrave education features the finest academic instruction in a military boarding academy setting. Tough, thorough Academic instruction is a Hargrave tradition stretching back to our founding in 1909. It is not uncommon for our graduates to experience easier lessons in their freshman/sophomore level college coursework, than during their years at Hargrave.

Grades 9-12 feature a college preparatory program. Students take six subjects and attend three subjects per day, alternating those subjects with the following day. The Academic day also allows students time to meet with their teachers should they have questions or difficulties in a particular subject area. These are called tutorials. The night prior to class, all students are required to attend study hall, mentored by the Hargrave faculty and staff.

Hargrave offers two types of diplomas, a Hargrave Diploma and a Hargrave Advanced Studies Diploma. To earn a Hargrave Diploma, a student must complete 22 credits: English, 4; mathematics, 3; science, 3; social studies, 3; computer application, .5; health, 1; fine arts/practical arts, 1; Bible, 1; military 1; and electives, 4.5.

Athletics
Hargrave Cadets enjoy a thorough line-up of athletic activities. Twenty sports, including twelve varsity sports and one club, provide Hargrave Cadets with plenty of options for competitive activity.

Hargrave sports programs are very competitive. Our teams are frequently either the Virginia Independent Conference (VIC) champions or contenders in several sports every year. Recently, these sports have included football, wrestling, baseball, swimming and our rifle team.
