| Our mission is to provide every cadet with an academic, character, leadership and physical education of excellence, which ensures their development and readiness for college, leadership, and citizenship. We achieve our mission through discipline, fostered with structure and a firm, fair, consistent and supportive environment. Massanutten's cadets are young men and women who desire advanced preparation for college within a structured, military environment. Our mission is established on the founding motto of the Academy, “Non nobis solum” (“Not for ourselves alone”), and based on the principles of Courage, Purity, and Industry. Established in 1899, the Academy adopted a military program in 1917. Today, the military structure plays a crucial role in the education of every cadet by creating a stable environment that is conducive to learning. The Academy's goal is to maintain an environment that is free of harassment and develops the academic and social abilities of all students to their fullest potential. Students are taught that learning is a lifelong process to be appreciated and enjoyed. Educating Today’s Youth Offering students grades 6-12 and one year of postgraduate study, Massanutten provides both boarding and day cadet programs. In addition to the regular academic session, Massanutten operates a summer cadet program in late June-July and two one-week adventure camps in August. Physical fitness is a vital part of the educational program at Massanutten teaching good sportsmanship, teamwork, and an appreciation for regular exercise. MMA believes that a healthy body aids a sound mind. Therefore, all cadets are required to participate on co-curricular athletic teams or intramurals activities. Studies show that students who are physically active have higher concentration levels, are better at time management, and are more likely to stay physically active throughout their lives. | |
